'”The court has not made public the arguments the Justice Department is putting forward for why it should be allowed to access Perry’s phone. Perry was identified by the House January 6 committee as a player in Trump’s efforts to weaponize the Justice Department. After the FBI seized Perry’s phone access, he filed a public lawsuit challenging investigators’ access to its contents. She said that investigators could access certain materials on Perry’s phone that his lawyers had argued should be withheld. To make her decision, Howell confidentially reviewed details about the information that was on Perry’s phone that the Justice Department sought, the source said.
By Rob Picheta, Anna Chernova, Nathan Hodge and Lauren Kent, CNNRussian President Vladimir Putin said he is suspending his country’s participation in the New START nuclear arms reduction treaty with the United States, imperiling the last remaining pact that regulates the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals. The treaty puts limits on the number of deployed intercontinental-range nuclear weapons that both the US and Russia can have. Under the key nuclear arms control treaty, both the United States and Russia are permitted to conduct inspections of each other’s weapons sites, though inspections had been halted since 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. According to US officials, Russia has continually refused to allow inspections of its nuclear facilities. “Russia’s refusal to facilitate inspection activities prevents the United States from exercising important rights under the treaty and threatens the viability of US-Russian nuclear arms control,” the spokesperson said.1 month ago KION546
The quake struck Turkey’s southern Hatay province, near the Syrian border, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) said Monday. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported the quake as being of magnitude 6.4 at a depth of 10 kilometers before revising it down to 6.3 magnitude. Monday’s earthquake follows a deadly magnitude 7.8 earthquake on February 6 that left more than 46,000 people dead in Turkey and Syria. Families who were affected by the the earthquake two weeks ago told CNN of the terror caused by Monday’s tremors. Monday’s quake is considered an aftershock as it is in the same general region and lower than the original 7.8 magnitude earthquake.1 month ago KION546
Standing alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Biden used his very presence in the Ukrainian capital to taunt Putin for failing in his ambitions to invade and control the country. Biden has declared Putin a “war criminal” and a “pure thug,” accusing Russia of genocide and, in his castle speech, making an implicit call for regime change. Yet this week’s carefully planned choreography is striking nonetheless in its overt pitting of Biden against his counterpart in the Kremlin. From the Warsaw castle, Biden intends to recommit to supporting Ukraine, even as the costs mount and public support appears to wane. Visiting the region this week, Biden hopes to again provide a rallying cry for Ukraine, demonstrating to Putin and Russia that Western resolve isn’t weakening.1 month ago KION546
By Brian Fung, CNNThe Supreme Court is set to hear back-to-back oral arguments this week in two cases that could significantly reshape online speech and content moderation. The closely watched cases, known as Gonzalez v. Google and Twitter v. Taamneh, carry significant stakes for the wider internet. US lawmakers, civil society groups and more than two dozen states have also jumped into the debate with filings at the Court. Many Republican officials allege that Section 230 gives social media platforms a license to censor conservative viewpoints. The Court last month delayed a decision on whether to hear those cases, asking instead for the Biden administration to submit its views.1 month ago KION546
White House national security spokesman John Kirby said a significant amount of debris was recovered and it included “electronics and optics” from the payload. The announcement capped three dramatic weeks that saw U.S. fighter jets shoot down four airborne objects — the large Chinese balloon on Feb. 4 and three much smaller objects about a week later over Canada, Alaska and Lake Huron. Due to their small size and the remote areas where they were shot down, officials acknowledge that recovering any debris is difficult and probably unlikely. It’s unclear how much control China retained over the balloon once it veered from its original trajectory. A second U.S. official said the balloon could have been externally maneuvered or directed to loiter over a specific target, but it’s unclear whether Chinese forces did so.1 month ago KION546
The first Iranian president to arrive in China on a state visit in two decades, Raisi was keen to tell Beijing that it has not given enough support to Tehran, especially economically. Raisi said that economic ties had regressed, and that the two nations needed to compensate for that. Chinese President Xi Jinping also accepted an invitation to visit Iran on a future date. Raisi’s trip comes as Beijing strengthens its ties with Iran’s foe Saudi Arabia, and as cheap Russian oil potentially threatens Iran’s crude exports to China. China is Iran’s biggest oil customer, buying sanctioned but cheap barrels that other nations would not touch.1 month ago KION546
By Matias Grez, CNNThe Barcelona Prosecutor’s Office is investigating FC Barcelona over allegations it made $1.5 million in payments over three years to a company owned by a then-leading official with Spain’s referee committee, CTA. FC Barcelona’s final payment was in June 2018, which coincided with Enríquez Negreira’s departure from the CTA, according to Cadena SER. When Cadena SER asked about the investigation into the payments, Enríquez Negreira acknowledged working exclusively for Barcelona. The Barcelona prosecutor’s office confirmed to CNN that an investigation was underway but said the proceedings were private.1 month ago KION546
