Nick Kyrgios withdraws from Indian Wells and Miami as he continues recovery from knee surgery

Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from next month’s Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami as he continues to recover from surgery on his left knee, event organisers said. The 27-year-old Australian had a terrific second half of 2022 but was forced to miss the Australian Open and has yet to make his 2023 season debut. But pain in his knee forced him to withdraw from the Japan Open in October and this year, after withdrawing on the eve of the Australian Open, he had knee surgery in Canberra. Kyrgios had originally hoped to return to the court for Indian Wells, but it now remains unclear when he will return to full fitness. Concussed players living with ‘deadly’ disease to launch class action against AFL in landmark case

Melbourne law firm Margalit Injury Lawyers is expected to launch the case against the AFL in the Supreme Court in coming weeks after several former and current players were diagnosed with the deadly neurodegenerative disease, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). “The thing about having a minor injury at this stage is that these types of neurological injuries are degenerative, some people are very fearful that if it’s only a minor injury now, what’s their life going to look like in 20 or 30 years? So there’s also the fear associated with the physical injury.”A Melbourne law firm is preparing to launch a case against the AFL over player concussions. The firm is calling for an overhaul of the current workers’ compensation scheme as AFL players are currently excluded from seeking WorkCover in Victoria. Former AFL player Ty Zantuck was also cleared by the Supreme Court to sue Richmond Football Club last year after being diagnosed with suspected CTE in 2021.

Three-time Richmond premiership forward Jason Castagna has announced his shock retirement on the eve of the AFL season. Cementing his place in the forward line, Castagna went on to play 134 games and was a member of the Tigers’ premiership teams in 2017, 2019 and 2020. “Jason has been the ultimate teammate over the course of his 134 games at Richmond,” he added. “He has had a terrific career, playing an important role in three premierships, and can walk away proud of his achievements as an AFL footballer. We wish Jason and his family all the best for the next chapter, and he will always be a Richmond man.”
