PCB, Punjab govt fail to agree on security expenses for PSL

The sticking point remains the demand of the Punjab government asking for Rs450million from the PCB for making security arrangements in Lahore and Rawalpindi for the matches. The PCB is wary that once such a huge amount is paid for PSL matches, it would set a precedent for the future and the government would ask for it in every international series”. Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan, which has already hosted its quota of five matches, were allotted 28 out of 37 games of the eighth PSL season. The PCB also informed the delegation that the Punjab government would earn Rs700million from the different provincial taxes from the PSL matches. The Punjab government is maintaining its stance that it has its limitations and cannot afford to spend Rs500-800million on holding matches of the PSL.

National Assembly passes finance bill to meet IMF conditions

In his concluding speech in today’s NA session, Dar said that the bill proposed to impose new taxes of Rs 170bn to minimise the fiscal deficit. Through the finance bill, the excise duty on cement has been raised from Rs1.5 to Rs2 per kilogram, a measure estimated to fetch another Rs6bn. The excise duty on carbonated/aerated drinks has been raised to 20pc from 13pc to raise an additional Rs10bn for the government. The increase in excise duty on business-, first- and club-class air tickets will raise an additional Rs10bn for the government. These measures proposed through the finance bill are in addition to earlier steps agreed upon with the IMF, including increasing electricity and gas rates and allowing a free-floating exchange rate.
