Ever since the Northern Ireland Protocol was signed off by both the UK government and the European Union as part of its Brexit deal, it has caused friction in the region. No checks on goods between GB/NIBoris Johnson told Sky News's Sophy Ridge back in 2019 that there would be "no checks on goods going from Northern Ireland to Great Britain, or from Great Britain to Northern Ireland" after Brexit. A police officer is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after being shot by masked men in Omagh. The senior officer was shot multiple times in front of young people he had been coaching at a sports centre just before 8pm in Co Tyrone. Liam Kelly, chair of the Police Federation for Northern Ireland, which represents rank and file officers, described the attack as "barbaric and cold-blooded". "Our thoughts are with the injured officer, his family, colleagues and friends at this difficult time," the Taoiseach said.
