OPINION: The terrible truth of climate change may, finally, have been seared into our collective consciousness. The word apocalyptic has been used to describe the trail of destruction that has been left in the aftermath of Gabrielle. In popular culture the word apocalyptic has tended to be employed as a synonym for spectacular destruction. The cultural origins of the word apocalyptic are rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Gabrielle is apocalyptic: the effects of climate change do not lie in some distant future but are existential realities here and now.
