Did God Command Israel to “Show Them No Mercy?”I have visited this issue before, but it still intrigues me. IF God commanded Joshua and Israel to slaughter Canaanite children, women, elderly, animals and “show them no mercy,” how can we say with any degree of assurance that God did not command that later? How do we know God didn’t command him to do that? Surely he thought he was obeying God and no doubt used the Old Testament texts of terror to justify it. I interpret the Old Testament as well as the New Testament in terms of Jesus Christ as the perfect revelation of God’s character and will.
The belief that birds guided souls through the afterlife was shared by ancient and indigenous cultures around the world for at least 9,000 years. The oldest method of soul flight was the sky burial, in which vultures devour the dead and fly their souls to the heavens. Most ancient cultures believed the soul resided in the head, which was likely placed on the pillar so vultures would peck out the brain/soul and carry it to the heavens. Across the globe in southern Peru, Moche artwork dating back 2,000 years shows vultures pecking at heads or body parts. Throughout history a wide variety of bird species were thought to convey human souls to the afterlife.1 month ago Patheos
In her book Why We Act: Turning Bystanders into Moral Rebels, social-scientist Catherine Sanderson explores why some people act bravely in the face of moral challenge. She asks: Why are some people moral rebels? Moral rebels learn from a young age that building moral courage—like all exercise—is done one lap at a time. But these situations create moral rebels. If we dismiss the tiny ethical challenges, telling ourselves they don’t matter (the “why sweat the small stuff?” dismissal) simply because they seem inconsequential, we rob ourselves.1 month ago Patheos
At worst, it’s dangerous because its caustic tone and muddled arguments discourage people from participating in global missions. Haddis urges the Western church to shed any colonial mindset that might poison the labor of Western missionaries. Certainly, racism has influenced Western missions. They are not unique to white western missionaries. A Just Mission is Just WrongChapter one sets the tone for the entire book.1 month ago Patheos
Since 2016, I’ve blogged five times about the Doomsday Clock, thus each time it was changed. That is the closest to Midnight that the Doomsday Clock has been since it’s inception. What is the Doomsday Clock. The Bulletin’s Science and Security Board (which now has ten Nobel laureates) then created the Doomsday Clock. There are several reasons the Bulletin’s Board decided today this time to move the Doomsday Clock’s minute-hand closer to Midnight than ever before.2 months ago Patheos
Mystal further challenges us that we have neglected the protections for reproductive justice that are arguably inherent in the Thirteenth Amendment. To say more about where reproductive justice might go from here, I invite you to consider two additional points. First, let’s look at the currently wide spectrum of personal opinions surrounding the subject of reproductive justice. Self-managed Abortion; Safe & Supported (SASS) is a gender-inclusive site for up-to-date medical and legal abortion information: abortionpillinfo.org . JOIN an organization taking action for reproductive justice such as SACReD (the Spiritual Alliance of Communities for Reproductive Dignity): sacreddignity.org .2 months ago Patheos
Here we go again, talking about my least favorite subject, the former priest Frank Pavone. Pavone has announced he’s going to have a livestream “press conference” on Friday ahead of the March for Life. No one ever forced Frank Pavone to become a priest. After some initial success, Frank Pavone began to be at loggerheads with Cardinal Egan in the Diocese of New York. I have never in my life seen anyone try so hard to get punished as Frank Pavone has tried.2 months ago Patheos
The prayers are then directed through her to God, not through God to Mary. God told Abimelech that Abraham would pray for him, so he could live, “for” Abraham was “a prophet” (Gen 20:6-7). *“All Israel” (1 Sam 12:1) “said to Samuel [the prophet], ‘Pray for your servants to the LORD your God, that we may not die’. * Ephesians 3:2 assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for you . * 1 Corinthians 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain.2 months ago Patheos
