Haaland breaks scoring record, City keeps pace with Arsenal

Erling Haaland has already taken one of Sergio Aguero’s scoring records for Manchester City. That’s more than any player has scored in a single campaign for City since the league started in 1992. Aguero had the previous highest total of 26 in 2014-15, part of his record all-time haul of 260 for City in all competitions. Prince Andrew’s decision to settle with Giuffre without admitting guilt – and now, apparently, attempting to overturn the financial settlement – has done nothing for his public reputation. Likewise, the Newsnight dramatisation will rake over the still-smouldering embers of the story; it is unlikely that Sewell’s portrayal of Andrew will be a sympathetic one.

MADRID (AP) — With yet another win, Barcelona left its problems off the field after a turbulent week. Barcelona defeated Cadiz 2-0 on Sunday as it extended its winning streak and lead over Real Madrid in the Spanish league. Sergi Roberto and Robert Lewandowski scored late in the first half to give Barcelona its seventh straight league win and get its lead over second-place Madrid back to eight points. Madrid had cut the gap to five points with a 2-0 win at Osasuna on Saturday. Atletico is 10 points behind city rival Real Madrid and 18 points behind league leader Barcelona.

Is coal making a comeback? Australian mining’s uphill battle

India, together with China, consumed 67 per cent of the world’s coal in 2022, up from 35 per cent in 2000. China itself claims to be moving toward a renewables future but their new coal generator build is proceeding apace. It hosts over half of the world’s coal plants and this is likely to increase since China accounts for over two-thirds of plants listed as planned or under construction. Australian coal energy generation is a little over 1 per cent of global capacity, a share that has been falling as new plants are opened overseas. Thus, even in nominal dollars, coal mining capital expenditure is below its level a decade ago and mining spending as a whole is down by a half.

(AP) — Five former Memphis police officers pleaded not guilty Friday to second-degree murder and other charges in the violent arrest and death of Tyre Nichols, with his mother saying afterward that none of them would look her in the eye in court. Bean admitted to police investigators he punched Nichols two or three times in the face because officers weren’t able to handcuff Nichols. Bean also held Nichols by one of his arms while Nichols was pepper-sprayed, kicked, punched and beaten with a baton.
