HT said in an analysis earlier this week that temperatures in seven states, including Punjab, a major wheat grower, are at levels usually seen in mid-March. The states that could experience a heat wave are mostly in the northwest, in India’s main food plain, comprising Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Generally seen as a desert state, Rajasthan is a major grower of a variety of grains and oilseeds. It is most at risk of a heat wave, an official said. Madhya Pradesh, another major grower, is least threatened because the state’s wheat crop matures earlier than elsewhere.
