García Luna, 54, is the highest-ranking current or former Mexican official ever tried in the United States. In his regular morning press conferences, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has regularly released updates on the process, often presenting sophisticated video reports produced by his government. Following the verdict, a spokesman for López Obrador tweeted: “Justice has come for the former squire of @FelipeCalderon. Mexico is also filing a civil lawsuit against García Luna in Florida courts to recover hundreds of millions of dollars allegedly embezzled by the former official. López Obrador — widely known by his initials AMLO — regularly claims that his leadership has largely eliminated the institutional manipulation that has long plagued Mexico.
