In an attempt to slow Michigan, Notre Dame down put all of its emphasis on physical play. And throughout a first period that saw just 13 shots and 25 penalty minutes — the Irish accomplished just that. And once again, the second period played out at a heavy and undisciplined pace, again with penalty minute totals outpacing minutes played and the score remaining blank. At every chance, Notre Dame played to kill the Wolverines’ speed, laying pounding checks at neutral ice and with their goalie Ryan Bischel coming up big in play after play. Michigan woke up too late, lulled by Notre Dame’s physicality, and it’s late game surge wasn’t enough to make up for it.
