Missoula quilters answer the call to help people in Ukraine

MISSOULA - A group called “Wrap Ukraine with Quilts” reached out to quilters guilds across the country asking if they would donate or create warm quilts for those in the middle of that war. Montana responded in a big way, and hundreds of quilts will not just go to Ukraine, but to Ukrainian refugees in Poland, Moldova, and Romania. “I proposed this idea to the Missoula Quilters Guild and just put it out there and asked if they’d like to participate in the program to send quilts to Ukraine and they just ran with the idea...it was unreal,” said Joni Storno. Lower Clark Fork study to look at elk, predators and people

MISSOULA - Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is teaming up with the University of Montana (UM) to study how elk survive in northwest Montana and what role predators and people might play. FWP biologists are starting a multi-year project monitoring elk, wolves, black bears and mountain lions along the lower Clark Fork River. In some areas of Montana, elk are so abundant that some landowners complain about too many. To study the effects of timber management on elk habitat and distribution, researchers will survey the types of forage and forested habitats that the elk use throughout the year. Mark Hebblewhite specializes in ungulate conservation and was a contributing author on the Bitterroot elk study published in 2015.
