Even those choirs of voices could not dispel the gloom that has settled over Welsh rugby, though. The parlous state of Welsh rugby is about more than just the strike. Wales captain Ken Owens called Welsh rugby a ‘laughing stock’. Wales, drained by the events of a traumatic week, had no chance to force their way back into the game. The reverence for the way rugby was and for its place at the cultural heart of the principality is still everywhere.
