Richie Gray insists in-form Scotland must not allow themselves to be spooked by the magnitude of their Guinness Six Nations match in France if they are serious about competing for the title. “Playing in the Stade de France is always a privilege and there is a lot on the line in the championship. “We know how big the game is but there is a danger of hyping it up too much potentially and playing within ourselves. Gray, preparing to win his 72nd cap this weekend, admits he cannot recall Scotland arriving in the French capital with such optimism. It is a big game tomorrow and we look forward to it and everybody at home is looking forward to it.
Football commentator John Motson, who became synonymous with English football during his distinguished 50-year career with the BBC, has died aged 77. Motson retired in 2018 after covering 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships, 29 FA Cup finals and more than 200 England matches. Motson called his first FA Cup final in 1977 when he replaced David Coleman for Manchester United’s win against Liverpool and from 1979 to 2008 he commentated on every FA Cup final for the BBC. Davie added: “Like all the greats behind the mic, John had the right words, at the right time, for all the big moments.1 month ago NewsChain
The warship is set to test-fire a Zircon missile during the joint naval drills, according to Russian state news agency Tass. South Africa has faced domestic criticism for participating in the drills. The South African National Defence Force has described the naval exercises with China and Russia simply as “a multinational maritime exercise”. The naval drills will “strengthen the already flourishing relations between South Africa, Russia and China” with the aim of sharing “operational skills and knowledge”, the military said in a statement. High-ranking US officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, recently visited South Africa to deepen diplomatic, political and economic ties.1 month ago NewsChain
“It’s why I came here because they see substance not other things,” Jones told a press conference. I know we run a football club really well, I know we develop individuals, I know we do good work, I know we’re thorough, I know we’re tactically good. What I said was I’ve compromised certain things I do on a day-to-day basis, which are my decisions. “I believe that we as a staff, but me personally, affect players, affect players positively. That’s what I want to continue to do and get back to really, really affecting them.”1 month ago NewsChain
Andy Murray threatened another miracle on Margaret Court Arena but fell to a four-set defeat against Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round of the Australian Open. The contest also came four years after he tearfully revealed the extent of his hip pain and that he was considering retiring ahead of a first-round clash with Bautista Agut in Melbourne. Metronomic, stone-faced Spaniard Bautista Agut was surely the last player Murray would have hoped to come across when free points were what he needed the most. He won just one of the first 15 points before getting on the board in the fourth game and Bautista Agut wrapped up the opening set in only 29 minutes. Bautista Agut led 5-2 and 6-4 in the tie-break but Murray again would not let go, getting back on level terms and then forcing two set points, of which he took the second.2 months ago NewsChain
Customers of a national fuel distributor, including elderly people living alone and young families, have described being left for long “horrible” periods without heating and hot water this winter as a result of failed oil deliveries. “It was horrible,” Ms Cullum, who lives with her two cats in Copthorne, West Sussex, told the PA news agency. Watson Fuels responded that a delivery would then be made on December 28, but when one failed to appear, they promised a delivery on December 31. According to Which?, around 5% of homes in Great Britain have oil central heating instead of gas central heating. Ross Mattison, 44, ordered oil from Watson Fuels on December 14 for it to arrive on January 3.2 months ago NewsChain
An “emotional” Robert Lewandowski has to digest his penalty miss against Mexico and be Poland’s spearhead for the rest of the World Cup in Qatar, according to his coach Czeslaw Michniewicz. “I sympathised with him, I know how a captain who misses a penalty feels,” he said. El Tri coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino said: “We never let (Poland) run at us, they’re always dangerous when they run. Asked how he would approach the match, Martino said: “I would say (we need to be) cleverer – knowing the game we must play. We need to think, we are playing against one of the main candidates to lift the World Cup trophy.4 months ago NewsChain
Ange Postecoglou offered no excuses as he admitted Celtic “were well off it” as they started their Australia trip with a 2-1 defeat to Sydney FC on Thursday. But the hosts hit back two minutes later and then got themselves in front early in the second half. Manager Postecoglou was disappointed with the way his team played. “It’s fair to say we were nowhere near the level we need to be,” he told Celtic TV. “Irrespective of who has been playing and who hasn’t been playing, we were nowhere near the level we needed to be,” he said.4 months ago NewsChain
