Tensions have boiled over at a Brisbane manslaughter trial with a woman leaving the courtroom in tears following heated exchanges in the public gallery. Joshua Elkerton-Sandy is on trial for manslaughter over the alleged stabbing death of a gatecrasher. Thousands of Australians have revealed they live with unseen and ongoing mental scars from surviving massive natural disasters. Of those, half said they'd encountered a mental health issue as a result of the upheaval. The mental health system is unable to cope with the impact of escalating extreme weather, a new report has found. They also found it harder to access mental health support and were more likely to declare that state emergency services and state governments were poorly equipped to deal with climate disasters. He said the study highlighted the devastating toll climate change is having on the mental health of communities.

A US Air Force pilot snapped a selfie of the Chinese surveillance balloon. (US Department of Defence)A senior State Department official said earlier this month that fly-bys "revealed that the high-altitude balloon was capable of conducting signals intelligence collection operations". (AP)The photo released on Wednesday clearly shows the pilot flying above the balloon, which was hovering 60,000 feet when it was spotted over Montana. The US sent up U-2 spy planes to track the balloon's progress, according to US officials. Recovery efforts began immediately after the balloon was shot down over the Atlantic Ocean on February 4, and were concluded on February 17.

New change brought in to combat Queensland youth crime

The parents of a boy stabbed to death in Redcliffe in 2020 say reintroducing breach of bail laws for youth will "make a difference" in Queensland - but say it will take a lot more to crack down on youth crime. Michelle Liddle and Ben Beaumont have called for more to be done on youth crime. (Today)Today, his parents have joined a rally with other victim rights advocates outside State Parliament to voice their frustration over the ongoing youth crime wave. Both called for further legislation, with Liddle saying rather than elevating maximum sentences, the government should commit to mandatory minimum sentencing. The change means if a juvenile offender breaches their bail conditions a court can consider that breach a criminal offence.

But by 5pm temperatures had plunged to 25 degrees at Melbourne Airport as the forecast cool change swept through. The heat peaked yesterday in South Australia when Adelaide reached 40 degrees as an out-of-control bushfire broke out in Port Lincoln in the state's Eyre Peninsula. The extreme fire danger conditions sparked a total fire ban for Central and North Central districts from the Country Fire Authority. "The focus of extreme heat will be around the Pilbara with temperatures of 46 to 48 degrees expected," Narramore said. "That's the third or fourth time we've seen temps in Australia record temps above 50 degrees," Narramore said.
