New Delhi: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to make his maiden trip to India early next month with an aim to boost overall bilateral engagement in a range of areas, including trade, investment and critical minerals. It will be Albanese’s first visit to India after he became prime minister in May last year. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Australia last week ostensibly to prepare for the visit to India by the Australian prime minister. However, Albanese mentioned about his visit to India in a tweet after meeting Jaishankar on Saturday. It will involve the navies of India, Australia, Japan and the US.

SC orders NGT to expedite Assam’s Baghjan oil well blowout case

The Supreme Court of India has asked the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to resolve the compensation issue of the Baghjan victims in two months on Monday. These villages had approached the Supreme Court of India in October 2021 seeking compensation for the devastation caused by the Baghjan blowout – India’s longest running oil fire from a rig operated by Oil India Limited – a government owned oil company. Surrounding landscape burnt from the explosion of the Baghjan oil well blowout in Assam’s Tinsukia district, along with the resulting oil spill. Finally this order has drawn a timeframe for adequate compensation,” said Niranta Gohain, a petitioner who approached Supreme Court along with Baghjan residents. The Supreme Court then stayed the formation of the NGT-appointed committees and re-appointed former judge B.P.
